Guidelines For Authors
Kiva Publishing is an independent publishing house with a regional and topical emphasis on Southwest Native American literature. We publish new titles in the following areas: illustrated children's stories, mythology and folklore, native crafts, anthropology, biography, and cooking. At present we do not publish any adult fiction, but will consider proposals if they tie in with our current publishing themes. We will also consider proposals for Hispanic children's stories and Southwest history.
Approximately half our titles each year are reprints of public domain books or out of print titles for which the copyright is readily available. We review out of print titles that tie in with our thematic emphasis.
We are not listed in periodicals such as Writers Digest because our limited production schedule (four to six titles per year) does not allow us to review numerous manuscripts. Most of our current titles have reached us through referrals from our current authors and illustrators.
- Authors and illustrators should be familiar with our publications, which are available from booksellers and shops. Authors who have not seen or read any of our titles should request a catalog or carefully review our website. Native American children's stories should have an Indian author or illustrator, and Hispanic children's stories should have a Latino author or illustrator.
- We prefer an initial inquiry by mail with SASE (see our address below) or email to kivapub@aol.com. Inquiry should include type of book, title, length, and whether or not the book requires illustrations. If so, are illustrations currently available? Please do not call with inquiries.
- If we would like to review a proposal, a partial manuscript, a completed manuscript, or an out-of-print book, we will request a copy by return mail or email, specifying what portion of the work we would like to review. When making a solicited submission, please include a stamped return envelope.
- Our review process usually takes eight to twelve weeks. If you have not heard from us at the end of twelve weeks, a followup letter or email is appropriate to inquire whether we received the submission, and when you can expect an answer.
- We do accept simultaneous submissions.
